VIDEO: Single Zoledronic Acid Injection Preserves Bone Health Better Than Daily Risedronate Pill (Interview with Prof. David Reid, MD, University of Aberdeen)

(April 9, 2009 - Insidermedicine) A single intravenous injection of zoledronic acid can preserve or improve bone health better than a daily pill of risedronate in those taking glucocorticoids, according to a study published in The Lancet.

Here is some information on glucocorticoid and bisphosphonate drugs:

•    Glucocorticoids are a type of drug taken to reduce inflammation.

•    Long-term use is associated with serious side effects, including depletion of bone density.

•    Bisphosphonate drugs help prevent and treat loss of bone density by blocking the natural process of absorption of bone by the body.

In a study from the University of Aberdeen, patients regularly taking glucocorticoid drugs were given either a single intravenous injection of zoledronic acid, or risedronate in pill form every day for one year.

Bone density was measured at the outset of the study and after a year. No matter how long the patients had been taking glucocorticoid drugs, those taking zoledronic acid had bone densities that improved as much as or more than those who took risedronate.

We had a chance to speak with Professor David Reid, the principal investigator of this study, who offered some further insight.

Today's research demonstrates how a single dose of zoledronic acid is as good as or better than a daily dose of risedronate at maintaining or improving bone health among those taking steroids long-term.
