VIDEO: Psoriasis Associated with Increased Risk of Blood Vessel Disease

(June 15, 2009 - Insidermedicine) Psoriasis is associated with an increased risk for blood vessel disease throughout the body as well as an increased risk of death, according to research published in the Archives of Dermatology.

Here is some information about atherosclerosis:

•    It is a disease of the blood vessels associated with a buildup of plaque inside the vessels

•    Atherosclerosis can occur in different parts of the body, including in the blood vessels that feed the heart, brain, or limbs

•    Atherosclerosis is known to be found more commonly among those who suffer from psoriasis

Researchers from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine compared the prevalence of atherosclerotic blood vessel diseases and their risk factors among over 3,000 patients with psoriasis and 2,500 controls.

Those with psoriasis were more likely to have hypertension, cholesterol problems, and diabetes, as well as to be smokers. After taking these risk factors into account, those with psoriasis were still more likely to have atherosclerosis in the blood vessels feeding the heart, brain, and limbs. They were also at a higher risk for death.

Today's research demonstrates how atherosclerosis associated with psoriasis can have an impact anywhere in the body and even increase the risk for death.
