VIDEO: Cervical Cancer Treatment with Total Mesometrial Resection Can Save Lives

(June 1, 2009 - Insidermedicine) Using total mesometrial resection, or TMMR, to treat cervical cancer can save lives and reduce disability rates, according to research published in The Lancet Oncology.
Here is some information about the treatment of cervical cancer:
• This is a cancer that must frequently be treated with surgery.
• In addition to the uterus, it is frequently necessary to remove pelvic tissue surrounding the location of the tumor.
• Following surgery, radiation therapy is frequently needed.
Researchers from the University of Leipzig evaluated over 200 patients who underwent TMMR, a modified hysterectomy designed to remove more cancerous tissue while sparing healthy tissue. The patients did not undergo radiation therapy following surgery.
After 5 years, 96% of the patients were still alive, and 94% were alive and cancer-free. This is particularly remarkable given that 63% of these patients were considered to have a high risk form of cervical cancer. In such patients, the cancer recurrence rate is typically as high as 28%. In addition, 63% of patients had no treatment-related complications
Today's research demonstrates how a new surgical technique for cervical cancer can both save lives and reduce complication rates.
