New Migraine Treatment Offers Same Benefits As Current Treatments But Fewer Side Effects

(November 27, 2008 - Insidermedicine) A migraine treatment with a novel mechanism of action may be as effective as currently available treatments but with less risk of adverse effects, according to research published in The Lancet.

Here is some information about migraines:

•    They are a disabling form of headache that may produce nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity.

•    Some people experience an aura before a migraine attack. The aura can include seeing sparkling flashes or light.

•    For many experiencing an attack, all they can think about is lying down in a quiet room. Regular activities become virtually impossible.

In a study conducted by Merck Research Laboratories, over 1,000 patients with moderate-to-severe migraines were randomly assigned to treat their migraines with 300 mg or 150 mg of a new drug known as telcagepant, 5 mg of a standard therapy known as Zomig, or a placebo.

The high dose of telcagepant was more effective than placebo and the lower dose at reducing or eliminating the pain, light sensitivity, and nausea associated with migraines. It was about as effective as Zomig, but fewer patients experienced side effects while taking telcagepant.

Today’s research demonstrates that telcagepant may provide the benefits without many of the disadvantages of currently available therapy.
