Low HDL Affects Memory, Intensive Renal Support No More Effective, Psilocybin Mushrooms May Alleviate Anxiety

|
(July 2, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From the UK - Low levels of HDL, or "good" cholesterol may be associated with a higher risk for memory loss. In a study of over 3,600 people, researchers found that those with low HDL cholesterol at age 55 were 27% more likely to experience memory loss, compared to those with high levels. At age 60, those with low HDL cholesterol were 53% more likely to have memory problems.
From Bethesda - Intensive renal support in patients with acute kidney injury is no more effective than less-intensive therapy. In a study of over 1,100 patients, the rate of death in those undergoing intensive hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration was 53.6% after 60 days, compared to 51.5% in the less-intensive therapy group. In addition, intensive therapy was no more effective at improving the recovery of kidney function, or reducing the rate of nonrenal organ failure.
And finally, from Baltimore - Psilocybin, the hallucinogenic substance found in psilocybin mushrooms, may be beneficial for those suffering from cancer-related anxiety or depression. Researchers gave psilocybin to 36 healthy volunteers, 60% of whom reported having a "full mystical experience". After 14 months, the same percentage reported that taking psilocybin had increased their sense of well-being or life satisfaction.
