Diabetics at Higher Risk for Arthritis, Breast Cancer Tumors Shown to Double in Size, Vaptans Effective in a Number of Conditions

(May 9, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From Atlanta - Diabetic patients of all ages have a much higher risk of having arthritis, when compared to those without diabetes. In an analysis of data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, researchers found over half of those with diabetes have arthritis. In addition, those between the ages of 18 to 44 years were 2.5 times more likely to have arthritis. The two conditions may be linked to the presence of obesity.
From Norway - A breast cancer tumor can double in size in as short a period as one month, according to research published in the journal, Breast Cancer Research. In a mathematical model based on data obtained from nearly 400,000 women, 5% of lesions doubled in size within the first month, and another 5% grew slowly over many years.
And finally from Brussels - A new class of medicine is demonstrating effectiveness in a number of clinical conditions, including glaucoma, painful periods, brain hemorrhage and psychotic episodes. Vaptans (vasopressin-receptor antagonists) target the vasopressin hormone system and play an important part in circulatory and water control within the body.
