(March 27, 2008 - Insidermedicine) Insulin glargine, which needs to be injected only once a day, is as effective at controlling blood sugar and is preferred by patients over insulin lispro, which must be injected multiple times a day, according to research published in The Lancet.

Here are some facts about type 2 diabetes and blood sugar control:

•    In those with type 2 diabetes, their body's ability to produce and respond to insulin is impaired. Insulin is necessary for the body to incorporate and use the sugar in the blood for energy.

•    It is important for individuals with type 2 diabetes to keep blood sugar levels at a steady level by taking drugs that help the body respond to insulin and, if necessary, injecting themselves with insulin.

•    While high levels of blood sugar can cause serious damage over time, dangerously low levels of blood sugar can be fatal if not treated promptly.

Researchers from the University of Giessen divided over 400 patients with type 2 diabetes that could not be controlled with oral medication into one of two groups. The first group received insulin glargine, injected once a day. The second received insulin lispro, injected three times a day.

Both groups of patients succeeded in controlling their blood sugar levels to a similar degree, but those taking insulin glargine were more satisfied with their treatment. Those taking insulin glargine were less likely to experience episodes of low sugar, and needed to test their blood sugar levels less often than those taking insulin lispro.

Today's research highlights how insulin glargine may be more convenient to use than insulin lispro, in those with type 2 diabetes.
